Kim Shropshire has been appointed as the next chief judge of the 6th Judicial District, which covers Archuleta, La Plata, and San Juan counties in Colorado. The appointment was made by Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Monica M. Márquez.
Judge Shropshire will succeed Chief Judge Jeffrey R. Wilson, who has served as a district judge since 2002 and as chief judge since 2017. Judge Wilson announced his retirement and will continue in his current role until January 2, 2026.
Judge Shropshire joined the district court bench in 2022. Before her appointment, she worked as a staff attorney for Colorado Legal Services and served as a Guardian ad Litem through the Mountain Ute CFR Court. She later opened her own law practice, focusing on family law. Judge Shropshire received her law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 2001.
“Chief Judge Jeffrey Wilson served the judiciary for 23 years and, in that time, showed outstanding administrative leadership, including his instrumental role in establishing a new courthouse in Archuleta County,” said Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Monica M. Márquez. “We look forward to working with Judge Shropshire, and we congratulate her on her new role.”
As chief judge, Shropshire will be responsible for administrative leadership in the district. Her duties will include appointing the court executive, chief probation officer, and clerk of court, as well as assisting with personnel, financial, and case-management responsibilities to ensure the efficient operation of the courts.
