Humzah Mashkoor, an 18-year-old resident of Westminster, Colorado, was arrested on December 18 at Denver International Airport. Authorities allege that Mashkoor attempted to provide material support to ISIS, a designated foreign terrorist organization. According to court documents, he planned to travel first to the United Arab Emirates and then continue on to Afghanistan or Syria with the intention of joining ISIS as a fighter.

The FBI Denver Field Office is leading the investigation into this case. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Cramer-Babycz from the District of Colorado, with assistance from Jennifer Levy of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.

“A complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” according to the statement provided.

Mashkoor made his initial appearance in federal court following his arrest.
