Applications are now open for positions on 17 Judicial Nominating Commissions across Colorado, as well as for four vacancies on the Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission. The Colorado Judicial Branch announced that a total of 42 judicial nominating commission vacancies and seven Supreme Court commission vacancies will be filled between now and mid-January 2025.
Judicial nominating commissioners are volunteers who serve six-year terms. Their role is to interview applicants for judicial vacancies and nominate candidates to the governor for consideration.
Each district nominating commission is composed of seven citizens from within the judicial district and one supreme court justice who serves as a non-voting ex officio member. No more than four members can belong to the same political party, and each county in the district must have at least one voting member. Non-lawyer members, who make up the majority of each commission, are appointed by the governor. Lawyer members are appointed jointly by the governor, attorney general, and chief justice.
The specific vacancies include both attorney and non-attorney positions in various districts throughout Colorado. Some districts require that certain members reside in specific counties.
For those interested in applying, more information about nominating commissions is available on the Colorado Judicial Department’s website at coloradojudicial.gov/supreme-court/judicial-nominating-commissions.
Applications are currently being accepted online through the State of Colorado Boards and Commissions Application page. Applicants should submit a current resume or biography with their application. Appointments may begin this month, so early applications are encouraged.
